Savannah: Day 2

5:23 PM 0 Comments
So we woke up on Friday morning feeling a little puny from our Thursday night escapades. Regretting the decision to have breakfast at 8:30am, we reluctantly rolled out of bed and headed upstairs where Leslie (our innkeeper) had prepared a delicious spread!
We began our meal with a martini glass filled with fresh bananas and berries, then moved on to an egg frittata, ham, watermelon and roasted potatoes. Don't forget the fresh squeezed OJ and much-needed coffee!
We managed to finish about half of it!
I soon realized that 'vertical' was not a good position for me, so we returned to bed. I know...I hate wasting time on vacation, but believe me-it was necessary. We had a walking tour scheduled for 1:30, so we took a mid-morning nap for about 3 hours.
Feeling much better, we set out for our walking tour with Bonnie Blue Tours. Bonnie was an excellent tour guide and we managed to cram a LOT into 2 hours. Her website is also an excellent source of where to go in Savannah-we used it a lot to plan our outings.

Statue of James Oglethorpe, founder of the colony of Georgia. He landed in Savannah and is responsible for the design of the grid system of the city.

The Cathedral of St. John the Bapstist

Isn't she gorgeous?

This is Chippewa Square. You may recognize this from a little movie called Forrest Gump. This is where Forrest sat throughout about 80% of the movie, waiting on a bus.

Ben and our tour guide Bonnie. He was in history heaven!

After our tour, we were ready to eat again (imagine that) and we scoped out a local place called Zunzi's. This hole in the wall (seriously) is rated number ONE on TripAdvisor and I know why! You walk squeeze in to a room with a counter in front for ordering and that's it. They serve mostly South African food, and wow-delicious! I think this was my favorite place we ate while we were there-both for the deliciousness and the uniqueness of the food.
Ben had a meal called "Oliver's Lunch"- chicken and sausage over rice with some fabulous sauce and it was all soooo good!

I had the Falafel

Hole in the Wall=delish!

Back to the inn to freshen up (did I mention-instead of the rain that was in the forecast, we had 80's and sunny? Yay...but humid and HOT!)
We scheduled a night time carriage ghost tour, and decided to get to our meeting place (City Market) a bit early to check out the area.

Just a fun little market with shops, art galleries, restaurants

Our horses (on the left)-Guinness and Murphy : )

The ghost tour was an awesome storytelling experience. I was interested to find out why, exactly, Savannah is so haunted. Between the battles fought, tragic fires, hangings, cemetery relocating- the dead are everywhere! The city is literally built on its dead. Our guide said that 60% of the ground you walk on while in Savannah is somebody's grave. We did a LOT of walking while there...that's a lot of graves..YIKES! Sorry to disappoint, but no pictures of the ghosts!
After our tour, it was time to eat again! We sought out the famous Vinnie Van Go-Go's pizza and had a most incredible dinner. The wait was a little long, even though we ordered to-go. We discovered a local secret while waiting for our food. You can order a "cold slice"-basically a plain cheese pizza-and get it right away. (It's not cold...just already made).
Ummm...please look at the size of this pizza!
We decided to head back to the inn and get to bed early. But first, Ben had to take advantage of Savannah's open container law. Yes, friends...you can have your beverage and drink it too (in the streets, that is!). This is only in the historic district, so don't go wandering over to Tybee Island with a beer!

And you thought Day One was busy!

Savannah: Day 1

11:34 AM 5 Comments
As I began writing about our trip to Savannah, I realized that each day was so packed with new things that there was NO way I could squeeze it all into one post. So...here goes Day 1:
We left our house around 6:30 on Thursday morning, and managed to avoid all rush hour traffic! After a quick stop for breakfast and caffeine, we were on our way. The drive was easy and we spent the time chatting about everything from our wedding to house hunting. We got a little lost in conversation, and Ben didn't realize how fast he was going...so after our speeding ticket issued by good 'ole GA State Patrol, we were back on the road.

We arrived at our Bed & Breakfast around 11am. I did a lot of research using Trip Advisor and we decided on The Catherine Ward House. One of my requests for our trip was to stay in a B&B. They have hotels in Savannah, but there is something about staying in an old, renovated home versus a brand new hotel that just completes the trip!

The house was built in 1886

After settling in to our room, we grabbed a map and some advice from the innkeeper and took off to explore the city!

The inn was across the street from this famous park. We saw picnics, dog walkers, sunbathers, weddings, concerts, proms, and vendors here.

A well-known fountain in Forsyth Park. The most photographed structure in the southeast.
The city is set up on a grid system, with squares throughout. Bull Street runs straight through the middle and is a very active street-shops, restaurants, historic sites & houses and squares. We took Bull St from our inn to the waterfront (River Street) where we took the "secret" elevator down to the water. There are steps (steep, uneven and made of cobblestone) but the locals take the elevator.

This is what I think of when I hear "Savannah":

The steps to River St.

Ben taking the elevator ; )

I love these buildings along the river-old cotton warehouses-converted to shops and restaurants

After our walk around River Street, we were ready for lunch!

Ben had a pineapple & ham burger with fried pickles. I had a BLT with avocado and sweet potato fries. (Hey, I never said this was a healthy eating trip!)

Back at the inn, I was able to snap some pictures of our room. We stayed in Nell's Room.

I loved the fresh flowers in the room!

We spent some time relaxing, then it was back out to explore and have some dinner. We ended up at Kevin Barry's Irish Pub. I had the BEST turkey reuben ever! We sat in the downstairs pub area and listened to a guy sing some traditional Irish folk music.

After dinner, we set off to find Savannah Smiles- a dueling piano bar. Let me say...if you only spend ONE night in Savannah, you must go here! The music was by request only...basically write your request on a napkin, throw a few bucks with it, and give it to the pianists. These guys played everything-Lady Gaga, Rocky Top, Backstreet Boys, Neil Diamond, and classic rock.

The time definitely got away from us while we were there...the booze was flowing (a little too much!) and the music was awesome. We stumbled out of there around 1am and began the looong walk back to our inn. Whew...what a day!

I will leave you with a little musical treat from the night

Pack Your Umbrella

This is the 5-day forecast for Savannah..doesn't look good.
We have a couple of walking tours booked, and we were really looking forward to enjoying the sun and city!
But...we are determined to have fun in sun or rain!

I might have to invest in a pair of these : )
Although I am bummed about this week's forecast, I feel fortunate that a year ago, we had a beautiful, sunny day for our wedding.

Spring=Busy!

8:53 AM 0 Comments
The past few weeks have been suuuuper busy-filled with lots of events, family, and friends-just the way I like it!
I guess it all started around Easter time...I worked the night before, then Ben and I enjoyed dinner at Aunt Aud's house. I made up a new recipe (a broccoli, chicken, cheesy rice concoction) and managed to stay awake for the evening!
A minor traffic jam on our way to Easter dinner!

After Easter, I worked and cleaned...and repeat. On Thursday, Ben's brother, sister-in-law, and niece came in town. We finally got to meet Ava : )

The family was off to a wedding, while I lived in up in Atlanta for Angie's bachelorette weekend! (Pictures to come...). We had a great time checking out the local bars, walking around Piedmont Park, shopping, and touring Sweetwater Brewery!

On Tuesday, Lori & Grandma Sally came in town for Ken's graduation from police academy. We were so happy they could stay with us and really enjoyed the visit. And...as every grandmother should, "Hamma" spoiled Rowen rotten : )
Naptime!
On Saturday night I worked, but managed to stay awake through Mother's Day breakfast with the family! My Mom was at a dog show yesterday (spending time with her other children) so she was off shortly after breakfast.
Mix in birthday celebrations, graduation parties, working nights, and a hair cut...it's been a crazy few weeks!!
After I woke up from my afternoon slumber, I was so ready to just sit and do nothing. So, I spent some time watching Ben & Rowen play fetch, then read a book on my Kindle (no glare!). Just what I needed for sure.

Yes, she does play fetch now...and loves it!
Uh-oh...lost the ball in the bushes, but Daddy will help!
For the upcoming week: I am working tonight and tomorrow night, then it's off to Savannah for our anniversary! I can't believe we are about to celebrate one year, and what better way to spend it than staying it at a B&B, touring the most historic city in the south, and eating!!

Meet the Furmans: Part IV

2:17 PM 3 Comments

Hello! I am 'Sandspur's Maiden Voyage on High Seas' but you can call me Rowen : )
I was originally brought home to be a conformation show dog, but an eye defect kept me out of the ring. After spending much of my puppyhood in the Cariota house, I came to live with Andrea & Ben. We are still working on calling them 'Mom & Dad'.

Work: I have completed Level I Obedience training and I can sit, stay, heel, down, and COME- this is the most important one I have discovered. If I don't obey this one, I get put back on the leash. I will begin Level II obedience this week, then I get to compete against other dogs. Most common words I know: walk, park, eat, leash, shoes, outside, potty, big potty, Jack, nap, night night and mat.

Hobbies: My favorite thing to do is go to the dog park...but I couldn't care less about the other dogs- I am just so excited all of those people came to pet me and give me attention. My adoring fans : )
I love going on walks and meeting new friends in the neighborhood. Although I am technically a golden retriever, I don't 'retrieve' or 'fetch' or whatever else you may call it. If you want the ball, go get it yourself. Why did you throw it in the first place?

TV: I love watching The Animal Planet...and I can't miss the annual Puppy Bowl! I like to watch dog shows too-someday you might see my cousin: 'Goldruls Let's Get Suri-Yes' or Suri for short. She's a young pup but has already taken home some blue ribbons.

Family: I live here at home with Andrea & Ben (er...Mom & Dad) and the squeaky toy named Mustang. I just love going over to my old house to visit my brother and litter mate, Jack and to teach Suri the ways of the world. I like it here and think I will stay ; )
