A Few of My Favorite Things {Cloth Edition}

1:30 PM 1 Comments
Back for another Favorite Things series! This time, it's all things cloth diapers.

Favorite Website: Sweetbottoms. This website is an excellent resource! They have just about every cloth diaper brand and type you can imagine, plus other natural products! The reviews are super helpful and shipping is always free. What more do you need?! A registry? They've got that, too!

Favorite All-Around Diaper: (This is starting to sound like high school superlatives...) BumGenius 4.0 Pocket. This is a great basic diaper. I prefer velcro because it's easier to put on a squirmy baby. These dipes are super absorbent and come in cute colors! ($17.95 per diaper)

Favorite Budget Diaper: Kawaii One-Size. Look familiar? These are basically a BumGenius knockoff. They work just as well, except the laundry tabs are becoming worn, so they stick together in the washing machine. But at $9.75 per dipe, it's a great solution for cloth diapering on a budget!

Favorite Detergent: Rockin' Green. I must admit that this is the only detergent I've tried. I think I'm too nervous to try anything else because...if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
My wash routine: rinse cycle on cold, then regular wash with 2 scoops of Rockin' Green on hot (with extra rinse). My dipes come out clean and shiny!

Favorite Wetbag: Planet Wise Wetbag. A great solution for storing used diapers between washes! No smell, easy to wash, and cute patterns. You can't go wrong with these!

Favorite Rash Cream: Grandma El's. It seems like diaper rashes are rare with cloth diapers, but in case the babe's bum gets a little red, slather on some Grandma El's! Regular diaper rash creams (like Desitin) are a no-go with cloth because it can cause build-up!

There you have it-my favorite things for cloth diapering!

Now, let's get real: I choose to cloth diaper my little P because it works for my family. It can be a lot of work, and it can consume your life if you let it. The trick is to know when to take a break. I would like to think I will always CD my kiddos, but the moment it becomes too overwhelming and it's taking away precious time with my family, it will end (at least temporarily).
I feel this applies to a lot of things: We always want to provide the best for our family, but if "the best" is taking away our time with them, we need to make a change.

We Heart Cloth

1:59 PM 4 Comments
Many of my friends have been asking how the cloth diapering is going. Well, I am happy to report that we are loving it! Yes, it does require a little extra work, but what I have learned is that babies require a lot of work. Since we started using cloth almost right away, we don't know a world without it...it just comes with baby territory!
I have perfected my wash routine and it's pretty much like doing an additional load of laundry.

This is where the dirty diapers go until I wash them-PlanetWise wetbag

First, I remove the microfiber insert from the liner and just throw both parts into the washing machine!
(Breastfed poop doesn't stain...so it all goes in the wash!)

My diapers have this 'laundry tab' you Velcro to prevent the diapers from sticking to each other

See? Easy

Then, I run a cold rinse cycle with no detergent.
Then, I run a wash cycle on warm. I use Rockin' Green detergent and I love it!

Then, I hang them on a drying rack!

Next, I stuff 'em. This is probably the most time consuming part of the whole process and it takes about 15 minutes max. I have actually found that stuffing diapers gives me a chance to sit down and watch some TV (read: The Olympics) while still feeling productive!

This is P-bug in her first cloth dipe- 1 1/2 weeks old!

And this is her now...so much has changed!

Do I ever use disposables?! Why, yes I do!
When we are out and about, I have found it easier to use a disposable diaper rather than carrying home a cloth diaper to be washed.

Also, on 'wash days' (about every 3 days) I use disposables for 2 reasons:
1) I need to invest in a third wetbag so I have a clean/dry one while the others are being washed (I throw the bags in with the dipes!)
2) You know how, sometimes, you want to do laundry in the nude just so that all of the laundry in the house is clean?! Well, that is how I feel sometimes on wash days. I want all the diapers to be clean...so we turn to disposables for the day!

I will continue to update as Peyton grows bigger and as I invest in different brands of diapers!

Cloth Diapering....Say Whaaaat?

1:29 PM 0 Comments
Welcome to my first of [I'm sure] many posts about cloth diapering. A little background:

Cloth diapering wouldn't have even been a thought on my mind if it wasn't for my BFF, Ashley, who cloth diapers her twins. She has talked me through the process thus far and answered my many questions regarding brands, wash routines, products, etc. The first time I visited M&P I had the chance to use cloth diapers and realized-I can do this! She has a great post about CD's (I have to get down with the lingo...) and promises to continue this series so we can all learn more about it!

Why? Yep, I have been asked this many times already! For me, it's mostly an economical reason. Babies and kids are expensive, and if I can cut down on some of these costs (i.e. by re-using something rather than throwing it away), I'm going to try!

Modern...I have used the term "modern cloth diaper" a LOT lately. This isn't the old days of folding, pinning, and rubber pants. Cloth diapers now come in a HUGE variety of options-with snaps, velcro, and cuuuute colors & patterns. It's overwhelming at times.

I got my first set of dipes in the mail yesterday. While I am the farthest thing from an expert at this, I did do a lot of research and read a lot of reviews regarding brand. To start off my "collection" I ordered a set of Kawaii Pure and Natural. These are a very reasonable price for coth diapers, and I wanted to start out small. I can't speak to how well they work because...I obviously haven't used them yet.

This set came with 24 diapers

This type is called a "pocket" diaper-there are inserts you stuff inside!

I have them snapped on the lowest setting.
These are designed to grow with the baby (6-22 lbs)

Although I haven't figured out a wash routine yet (I hear it's a trial & error), it's a pretty easy process-machine wash and machine dry (I plan to line dry).

Have I peaked your interest? Here are some websites I have found particularly helpful when sorting things through:
All About Cloth Diapers

Sweet Bottoms Baby (great reviews of products!)

Nickis Diapers

Wish us luck as we begin this cloth diaper journey!
